Big rigs, tractor trailers, and other commercial trucks have big side-view mirrors sticking out their sides. Most people see these mirrors as an important safety feature—one that allows drivers to see along the sides of their truck. However, a new plan suggests getting rid of these mirrors could actually help prevent trucking collisions.

In fact, in Europe, American company Stoneridge Inc. has already replaced some big rig side mirrors with a system of sensors and cameras. The trucks with these devices have been on the road since 2016 and proponents say the pilot project shows that replacing side-view mirrors can reduce truck accidents while improving fuel efficiency. Now, the company is using the system on real-world trucks in America and is seeking exemptions for mirrors from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Continue reading →

Unfortunately, delivery trucks can also be a source of traffic accidents in Hollywood and South Florida. These trucks often share the space with other road users in store parking lots, in residential areas, and on city streets, where they can pose a danger to passenger cars and pedestrians. In addition, delivery truck drivers often face tight deadlines and this can pressure them to drive for longer hours than is safe, in spite of hours of service regulations.

Many seniors take mass transit because they can no longer drive or because they wish to reduce the costs associated with owning a car. Other seniors use shuttles because they are part of a nursing home or retirement home which uses this mode of transportation for residents.

Walking is one of the oldest forms of exercise and it is one of the healthiest. It is low-impact and has a lower risk of injury than many sports but also provides a whole-body workout with no special costs or equipment needed. Many people love to walk to relax, spend time with their dog, or just get out of the house.

A safety outreach program called Share the Road is hoping to reduce the number of trucking collisions across America. The group, among other efforts, is raising awareness about driving techniques motorists need to use around larger commercial vehicles. According to the organization, if you are a passenger car driver, you need to:

1) Watch your speed.

Driving too quickly can increase the risk of an accident because it reduces the amount of response time you have in case anything goes wrong. Driving over the speed limit can also increase the risk of a serious accident by increasing the force of any potential crash.
