Summer Safety in Miami and Southern Florida

Now that summer is upon us, it’s time to focus on summer safety. Children will be home from school for  a few months and summer activities, while fun, come with their own hazards.

We think of summer as a carefree time, but summer holidays may mean a higher risk of DUIs while more tourists on the roads can mean more traffic congestion and a potential for car accidents. In addition, the high heat and the glare can contribute to traffic collisions while summer activities can mean water-related injuries or fire hazards. When it comes to summer, you want to have fun, of course, but safety needs to come first. Doing just a few things now can mean a whole summer with less risk for you and your family.

To stay safe this summer, you will want to:

1) Check your pool area.

You may be subject to a premises liability claim in Miami or your community if a child or someone else accesses your pool and suffers an injury. This is a great time of year to check your pool area and to ensure it is properly secured. A high fence and self-locking gate are the minimum precautions you want to take.

Check these areas to make sure everything is working correctly. In addition, it can be useful to install an alarm that will automatically send an alert to your cell phone or mobile devices if anyone is in the pool area.

2) Get serious about fire safety.

This is a great time to check your grill area to make sure there is no dry grass or overhanging branches over your BBQ. Ideally, grill well away from the house and away from any flammable materials. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand and make sure you properly supervise any children outside when you’re grilling.

Keep propane tanks and fuel well away from children and stored safely. In your home, install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure you have fire extinguishers in your home, including in your kitchen. If possible, consider installing sprinklers that will automatically douse flames in the event of a fire.

3) Tackle car safety.

Car accidents can be a greater risk during summer holiday time. Make sure your car is in good condition and stay focused when you’re behind the wheel. Put away distractions so you can focus on safe driving.

Remember that summer can mean more pool parties and barbecues, and that can mean a higher risk of DUIs. Have a plan to get home safely after parties or if you plan on drinking. All summer long, it’s a good idea to have a get-home-safe plan—just in case.

Charlie is a very skilled attorney that advocates hard for his clients. But the best part is he is an all around great guy. Do yourself a favor and call him. Andy
I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
