Transit Safety: Staying Safe on Your Commute

Mass transit is considered safer than driving. Quite simply, you’re far more likely to be in a car accident in Hollywood than to be in a mass transit accident in your community. Whether you’re traveling by train, bus, taxi, or some other means of transport, you’ll want to stay safe.

The recent discussions about safety involving Uber may have started some discussions about transportation safety, and at Flaxman Law Group we hope you stay safe no matter how you travel. When taking mass transit there are a few things you’ll want to do:

1) Know your route ahead of time.

Know where you need to go and understand where your stop is. Being lost can be stressful and may make you more of a target for muggings.

2) Wear proper footwear.

Slip and fall and trip and fall accidents are a common problem in Hollywood, and bus steps or train platforms can be slippery. Wear sturdy shoes with good treads so you can walk with confidence.

3) Give yourself plenty of time.

If you’re taking a bus or train, give yourself adequate time to get to the stop. Running for a train or bus can easily lead to tripping and serious injuries. If you are late, know the schedule well enough to know when the next bus or train is coming. Avoid running for a bus or train and never try to hop on board as the doors are closing – you could become caught in the doors and that can cause serious injuries.

4) Try to use transportation with stops in more central locations.

Well-lit stops in high-traffic areas are safer than remote stations or bus stops, where you may be more conspicuous and more in danger of muggings.

5) Stay aware of your surroundings.

Avoid listening to music or getting distracted. When walking to and from a station or stop, look around. On board, stay aware of your belongings and passengers close to you. Note the bus number. If you’re in a taxi, note the taxi number and identifying information about the driver posted at the front of the cab. If you’re traveling alone, consider texting a photo of this information to a friend.

6) Keep your possessions close to you.

If you’re carrying a laptop case, briefcase, or purse, keep it close to your body, with a firm grip on it. Avoid using or revealing expensive possessions, such as a new mobile device or expensive camera—these may prove attractive to thieves. Never leave anything of value unattended on public transit.

7) Let someone know you’re on your way.

When someone knows you’re on the way, they’ll be able to call for help if you don’t arrive on time.

If you are injured on a bus, train, or in a taxi or other form of mass transportation, know that there are legal options available to you. Charlie is a very skilled attorney that advocates hard for his clients. But the best part is he is an all around great guy. He cares about helping and doing what is right for people and his community. And he is not afraid to fight against those who do wrong or against threats to our world. He is fluent in Spanish as well. Do yourself a favor and call him. Andy

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
