Support for Sexual Assault Survivors in Hollywood and Florida

Despite many efforts, sexual assault and sexual violence remains a serious problem in Florida, with about one in six women in Florida having been raped in their lifetime and 20.4% of Florida men suffering a form of sexual abuse other than rape.

If you are the survivor of sexual violence in Hollywood or in Florida, there are many places you can turn:

The Florida Council Against Sexual Violence (FCASV) has a toll-free phone line and local centers to help survivors. The organization is also involved in advocacy. They can help you figure out where to go and can provide support if you need to visit a doctor or the police after the attack.

Your doctor or emergency department. If you have suffered a physical injury, you will want to visit a doctor or emergency department for help. In addition, you will want to go to an emergency department or doctor as soon as possible (and before showering) if you want evidence gathered if you would like charges filed. Even if you’re not sure you would like to file charges, you may wish to have medical evidence gathered in case you decide to file a claim or charges at some point.

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is largest anti-sexual violence organization in the country. They provide many resources and also have a toll-free number at 800.656.HOPE as well as online support in English and Spanish.  They can provide you with online or over-the-phone support at any time and can help you find local resources.

The police. Sexual abuse, assault, and rape are crimes. The police can help you file charges to pursue the perpetrator so he or she cannot hurt you again. You can also get a restraining order against your attacker or abuser to ensure you have legal options if they try to approach you again in the future.

A sexual assault attorney. Many people do not realize they have other legal options besides filing criminal charges. For this reason, it is important to consult with a Hollywood sexual assault attorney to discuss your situation. You may have  a civil claim against your perpetrator, which can help you seek compensation for your medical costs, lost wages, counseling costs and other expenses. Regardless of the outcome of the criminal trial, you may have a civil claim. Even if your perpetrator is never caught, you may have a claim against other liable parties. Recovering compensation is important in this situation, since it can help you pay for the best treatment and support so you can continue to heal.
