Seemingly Innocent Habits that Could Lead to a Personal Injury

Of course, many of us know that drunk driving or speeding can lead to a serious car accident in Hollywood or our communities. But many of us engage in simple habits that increase our risk of injury.

If you have any of these habits, for instance, they may well increase your risk of an injury:

  • Ignoring snoring at night. If you snore at night or don’t wake up rested, you could be suffering from sleep apnea. With this condition, you may be waking up for short bursts throughout the night, but for such short periods that you don’t remember in the morning. Sleep apnea can affect the quality of your sleep and can make you dangerously fatigued during the day. Left untreated, sleep apnea can make you tried enough to get into car accidents and workplace accidents.
  • Not examining your drinking. Many people are committed to not driving drunk, but did you know that even driving while buzzed can put you (and others) at serious risk? If you are drinking often, consider you may be getting into the car after one or two drinks, and that is enough to affect your ability to avoid a car accident, even if you are under the legal limit.
  • Leaving your gear unbuckled. You toss on your helmet when you hop on your bike, but you forget the strap. You put on your helmet for football on the weekend and you ignore the fit. At work, your safety glasses hang around your neck as you show something to a colleague.
  • Putting a lot on your schedule. Overwork is not just stressful; it can also be a hazard. When you are overwhelmed and stressed out due to too much work, you are essentially distracted because you’re thinking about everything you need to get done. This can put you at an increased risk of many injuries, including work injuries.
  • Daydreaming. If you have your head in the clouds, you are effectively distracted. Daydreaming can lead to pedestrian accidents, traffic collisions, workplace injuries, sports injuries, and harm in many types of settings.
  • Buying clothes primarily for fashion. Unsteady shoes, no matter how attractive, can put you at an increased risk for slip and fall and trip and fall injuries, as can clothing which is too restrictive. When shopping, look for well-made items which do not have long drooping hems or any details which can put you at risk.
  • Not having emergency plans. In your home and workplace, you should have an emergency plan for violence, fire, and natural disaster. In your car, workplace, and home, you should have an emergency kit which allows you to deal with minor injuries and small emergencies. Don’t forget a financial emergency plan, too. If you are injured while swimming or on your commute, do you know what expenses you can cut at once to keep your head above water until insurance money comes in or until you can work again? If you don’t have emergency plans, start creating some today.

If, despite your efforts, you are injured and are worried about paying for medical bills and related expenses, consider whether you may be eligible for legal claims. If your injuries were caused by someone’s negligence or recklessness, you may be eligible to seek compensation.
