What Truck Drivers and Companies are Doing to Address Mental Health and Truck Accidents

Mental health has an impact on driver safety. While there are no statistics to determine how many Hollywood and Florida truck accidents can be linked to mental disorders or mental distress, researchers agree that depression and other mental conditions can and do compromise road safety. Mental illness can lead to changes in sleep patterns and overall health, for example, which can in turn affect focus. Some conditions, such as dementia, can lead to confusion and cognitive difficulties which can make driving difficult.

Truck drivers and trucking companies are increasingly recognizing this problem and pursuing solutions. There are many things truck drivers can and do try to improve their mental health:

  • Finding sources of support so they can speak to individuals and groups regarding the difficulties of their job or any mental health symptoms they suffer.
  • Recognizing the symptoms of mental illness and seeking help when they notice any concerns.
  • Pursuing a healthier diet and sleep schedule to avoid depression and mood swings which can negatively impact both physical and mental health.
  • Developing mental health practices which can help them stay healthy. This could mean better time management or stress reducing options such as yoga, meditation, journaling, or reading.

Trucking companies, too, have an obligation to ensure they help address mental health and safety among their drivers. There are many things that companies can and have been doing:

  • Allow drivers to have a companion on the road. Rider policies which allow drivers to take a friend or a pet in order to have support and companionship on the road can help reduce some of the isolation and loneliness truck drivers may feel, which can positively impact mental health.
  • Create more supportive and social workplace environments so drivers can talk to each other and can reach out when they need help.
  • Offer more resources for drivers. Trucking companies who offer benefits or make it easier for drivers to seek help when they need it without fear for their jobs help create a positive workspace that is also a healthier and safer one.

Truck drivers work hard and deserve full support to stay healthy, both physically and mentally, on the job. This not only helps them do their best but can help reduce the risk of on-the-job injuries as well accidents in Hollywood in the country.
