The injury and illness rate of retail workers is disproportionately high. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2014 the injury and illness rate for retail workers was 3.6 per 100 workers (based on reported incidents). In comparison, the rate of injury and illnesses across all industries was 3.4 per 100 workers. Retail workers that year actually had the same rate of injury as workers in the construction industry.

At this time of year, many students look for part-time or full-time summer jobs in Homestead and across South Florida to raise some money for cars, clothes, or just pocket money. If you have a teenager or younger child looking for a paper route, office job, temp job, or other employment, make sure that your child knows how to stay safe.

One of the risks with summer employment for Hollywood youth is that there is a high risk of injury. Studies and research have shown that youth may be less protected than other workers because they do not have seniority and may be hired on a contractor or temp basis, meaning that they do not have the same protections as full-time employees.

Unfortunately, there is a darker side to summer jobs. Teens tend to be seasonal or part-time employees and studies have found that they can be especially at risk of work injury in Miami and other communities. There are a few reasons for this:

  • Teens may not be aware of the risks of their jobs
  • Young and seasonal workers may be more reluctant to speak up when they see dangerous conditions because they don’t want to lose their jobs
  • Teens may have fewer benefits and less training that permanent employees, making them more vulnerable to injury and more vulnerable once injury occurs
