If you are having surgery or certain types of medical procedures, an anesthesiologist will be an important part of your medical team. The anesthesiologist is responsible for ensuring that the patient enters a medical state known as anesthesia, which means the patient will not be awake or aware of the pain of a medical procedure. Doctors, anesthesiologists, and nurses may all be responsible for ensuring that a patient is given the right sort of medication to induce anesthesia and is monitored carefully during the entire procedure.

A lot can go wrong when a patient is under anesthesia. In fact, many people consider the anesthesiologist’s job to be more dangerous than that of the surgeon. Many surgical mistakes and surgical malpractice lawsuits in Hollywood and Florida happens because of anesthesia malpractice. If you have suffered an injury while under anesthesia, do not hesitate to contact Flaxman Law Group for a free case review.

Hip joint damage can happen to people of all ages, but often affects those who are middle aged or elderly. When this type of damage happens, patients may experience pain and decreased mobility. Some are given medication or walking aids to help them reclaim their lives. Many doctors, however, recommend hip implants and hip replacement surgery as solutions. Arthroplasty, also known as hip replacement surgery, replaces diseased or damaged hip joints with prosthetics. The idea is that these replacement prosthetics will make it easier for the patient to move around without pain.

According to the CDC, hip replacement surgeries are a very popular procedure, with about 332,000 full replacements done each year across the country. While most result in good outcomes, however, some result in complications, permanent injury, and even class-action lawsuits. If you have had hip surgery in Hollywood or South Florida and find that your mobility and pain levels are worse rather than better, you can always contact Flaxman Law Group for a free accident consultation.

Bed sores have many names, including pressure sores, pressure ulcers, and decubitus ulcers. These wounds occur when someone is bedridden and pressure is placed on parts of the body. Bed sores are most likely to affect the heels, back of the head, elbows, hips, backs, and shoulders, because these are the areas of the body that come into direct contact with a bed when someone is laying down.

Bed sores unfortunately affect the most vulnerable. Nursing home patients, residents of assisted living facilities, patients in comas, bedridden patients, quadriplegic individuals, and people with severe mobility issues are most likely to be affected. Any time that someone is bedridden for an extended period of time, the risk of pressure ulcers is there.

Plastic surgery has become a booming business. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons there were 15.6 million cosmetic procedures across the country in 2014 – an increase of 3% from the year before.

Hospital Equipment

Most patients turn to cosmetic surgery to increase their confidence and to look better. Most don’t imagine that pursuing a better look could cause serious or event fatalities, but it does happen. In some cases, patients suffer from poor results. A brow lift may cause uneven brows or unusual puckering of the skin, for example. In other situations, the results may be more dire. Patients may suffer from serious complications or allergic reactions. In some cases, implements are left in the patients during surgery or anesthesiologists make errors that cause brain damage, loss of motor function, or other serious complications. In some cases, complications cause coma or even fatalities.

When you head to a hospital, you expect to get medical help so that you can get better. Unfortunately for many patients, emergency room malpractice in Hollywood as well as other forms of negligence can lead to hospital caused injury, infection, and complications. If you need to visit a hospital, you will want to take these precautions to prevent injury:

1) Check hospital scores.

The Leapfrog Group has released its ratings of Florida hospitals and 24 facilities in the South Florida area have gotten an “A” grade for infection prevention and safety. 44 hospitals in the region were grades and only one got a “D” ranking, while 14 got a “B” and 5 were awarded a “C.” The hospitals were graded for safety, accident and injury prevention, and prevention of infection. The last Leapfrog Group report, in the Spring, gave only 22 area hospitals an “A” grade, so the rankings are good news for South Florida. While hospital scores do not ensure a good experience for patients, they can help patients make informed decisions about where to seek medical help.

Patients visit doctors, hospitals, and clinics to get better. Florida is lucky to be known for cutting-edge medical research as well as excellent hospitals and health care providers. In fact, people from all over the world visit the state in order to get medical treatment. While many health care settings are careful to provide the best possible care for patients, however, some medical care providers and negligent and reckless with patient health. When this happens, medical negligence lawsuits in Hollywood and other Florida communities will sometimes occur.

What Happens When Patients Are Injured Due to Medical Negligence

When a patient injury or child injury in Hollywood or another city occurs due to medical negligence, a big part of the problem is that in many cases patients may not even be aware of the fact that their negative medical outcome was caused by recklessness. Doctors and health care providers do not generally announce that they have made a mistake and do not admit that a negative outcome was preventable. In some cases, patients find out about possible negligence by accident or because the negligence was obvious.

In the aviation industry, briefs and checklist are often used to prevent airplane crashes and errors in Hollywood and other communities. The healthcare system in Hollywood is now using a similar method in six area hospitals to improve patient safety and to prevent surgical errors.

As part of a new system introduced in 2008, Hollywood’s Memorial Healthcare System uses what it calls “crew resource management” in operating rooms to prevent surgical errors and improve patient experiences. The management involves using checklists, debriefings, briefings, communication scripts, and structured handoffs as part of surgeries. At first, doctors and surgeons were worried that the “crew resource management” system would make each surgery and procedure longer, but the system has actually been shown to save time. One important way that the system saves time, for example, is ensuring that less equipment is forgotten for surgeries, which means that staff don’t have to leave and reenter the sterile environment of the surgical room to retrieve these times.

Summertime can be a busy time for hospitals and emergency rooms. There tend to be more car accidents in Hollywood and other communities, especially during long weekends and holidays. Since children are home for the summer, there are also more child injuries and swimming pool injuries in Hollywood and surrounding communities. Summertime activities can also mean a higher risk of burn injuries and fireworks injuries during this time of the year.

Unfortunately, an influx of patients can overwhelm health care workers and can create situations where injury and medical malpractice claims can occur. To prevent this, you will want to:

1) Prevent injury where possible.

The best way to avoid a medical malpractice claim in Hollywood or a negative medical experience in your community is to stay out of hospitals and emergency rooms in the first place. Even though most emergency departments are staffed by caring professionals, they are still high-stress environments where misdiagnosis and error can occur. Be proactive with your health and use common sense to avoid injury in the first place.

2) If you need to visit a doctor, visit the right facility.

Does your injury require a visit to a clinic, your regular general practitioner, a specialist, or an emergency room? Going to the right person can help you avoid delays with treatment and can ensure a better outcome.

Medication is meant to make patients better, but unfortunately medical malpractice in Miami and other Florida cities as well as medication error can conspire to cause accidental overdoses, dangerous drug interactions, and allergic reactions. In some cases, drug manufacturers are to blame for releasing dangerous drugs to Miami and Florida patients. In many cases, medication problems are preventable and could be prevented if we could:

1) Ensure better information distribution.

Many patients are overwhelmed with information. They may not be given much information about a new medication from a doctor but may be given pages of technical drug information from the pharmacy. Some of the information may be difficult to understand and some may be contradictory. Some information is issued by drug manufacturers and some by pharmacies, which means it may contradict itself or be written in technical language that is difficult to understand.

2) Create better communication between patients, doctors, and pharmacies.

Sometimes, pharmacy negligence cases in Miami and other Florida communities occur because there is a breakdown in communication. Doctors may misinterpret information that patients give them, resulting in misdiagnosis and other issues. In some Miami area hospitals and clinics, patient care is in the hands of many medical experts and there may be miscommunication between individuals or even incorrect information entered into a patient’s chart. Sometimes, the pharmacy cannot read a doctor’s prescription or a doctor enters incorrect information into a prescription. Clearer and more transparent communication between all parties could reduce instances of medication error and misdiagnosis.
